So… blogging again, let’s see what comes of it this time. This blog will be sort of a experiment, I’ll write about whatever comes to mind, from gaming to family, travel to coding. I will try to tag my posts accordingly so you readers will know if this is a post that’ll interest you or not. I’ve had a previous gaming blog, I think I wrote maybe 7 posts in it, then it died away and the database backup has since been corrupted. But, fresh start and we’ll see where the road takes us… or me, anyways.
So, a little about the address and the theme. Auni Tech is my sort of personal business which I intended to use to sell my IT services. Didn’t work out, too much paperwork, bookkeeping and other stuff, so I figured I could just use it as Auni’s Tech blog. The name Auni is short for Aunion, which is the handle I’ve been going by on the internet for over 10 years. It all started by a name created in a random name generator in Anarchy Online; continued in World of Warcraft, and these days I’m doing my best to snap up the Aunion username wherever I go (with varied success).
As for the theme, well, I just generally like the clean simplicity of terminal windows. They’re soothing to read and they fit the mostly tech theme of this blog. I’m building this theme on the FoundationPress theme template, so if there are some odd graphical glitches I’m 100% to blame. The theme and this site in general is just a fun little side project for me, a chance to test out different new technologies and to express myself.
Now, a bit about me. I’ve been working with programming since 2005, with web development since 2008 and with CMSs, Drupal in particular, since 2013. I’ve studies programming, first at Helsinki University of Technology (which didn’t go very well since I quit after a year or so due to the studies being too theoretical and the way they tested our skills feeling dates (coding on paper? ugh…), but it did get me excited about coding) and then, later on at Arcada University of Applied Sciences, where I graduated as a Bachelor of IT in the spring of 2015.
My last few years of working with CMSs has given me a new appreciation of what CMSs let’s a good programmer do and how much they can make your life easier. While working a lot with Drupal I’ve come to appreciate the great community that has been built around Drupal and am trying to participate in the community when I can. I even wrote my thesis at Arcada on the subject of implementing a web shop using Drupal Commerce.
Let’s jump from work to fun; gaming. I’ve been gaming since… well, I don’t even know since when. First games I remember were on an old, old Macintosh. I’ve since lived through the releases of such gaming classics as Red Alert, Heroes of Might and Magic, Deus Ex, Settlers 2 and Monkey Island, to name a few of my favourites. In 2005 I jumped onto the World of Warcraft bandwagon as soon as eBay got my Collector’s Edition shipped to me and have been playing that on and off ever since, with almost 100% subscription time (still carrying a grudge against Blizzard for not getting a loyal customer wolf statue…). These days, with work and family, I don’t have as much time to game as I used to, but I still try to find time to play games from series like Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Assassin’s Creed. I also enjoy playing pretty much all of the other games that Blizzard have released.
Another of my hobbies is reading, mainly SciFi and Fantasy. Some of my favourite authors are Robin Hobb, Robert Jordan, Isaac Asimov, Frank Herbert. Seanan McGuire, Jim Butcher, Scott Lynch… the list goes on and on. I also enjoy the works of both Patrick Rothfuss and George RR Martin, but am rather annoyed at their ridiculously slow writing paces (no matter what Neil Gaiman says, get off your arses and start writing instead of doing every bleeping con, podcast etc you get invited to…). Oh… and my favourite author of all time is the recently departed Terry Pratchett.
As for family; well, I’m married now, got a two year old daughter who’s the center of my world and of course a dog who’s turning 8 today. Family life, especially my daughter, takes up a lot of my time these days, but that’s something I’m very happy about. Like I said, my daughter’s the center of my world, and there’s nothing that brings me more joy than spending time with her.
Well, that’s a not so short intro to this blog, now let’s see where this road leads…
